Ensuring human safety and effective risk management is at the core of a sustainable and resilient maritime industry. At the Decarb Hub, our Human Safety and Risk programme is dedicated to safeguarding lives and enabling a safety transition to zero emission shipping. We believe that the pathway to decarbonisation must be built on a foundation of human-centric safety standards and evidence-based risk management practices.

Our programme is structured around three focus areas:

Human Competency Development
The introduction of alternative fuels and new technologies demand new skills and safety protocols across the maritime workforce. Our Human Competency Development initiative is designed to equip seafarers, port operators, shipbuilders, and other stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and expertise to operate safely in a decarbonised maritime ecosystem. Through tailored training programmes, immersive simulations and collaborative learning platforms, we are dedicated to ensuring that the workforce is prepared for the complexities of zero emission shipping.

Human Centricity in Design and Operations
To achieve a safe and sustainable maritime transition, the human element must be integrated into every aspect of a ship's design and operational practice. Our Human Centricity in Design and Operations focus area, advocates for a user-centred approach, ensuring that the safety, well-being and performance of maritime professionals are prioritised. By influencing design standards, operational procedures and human-machine interfaces, we aim to reduce human error, enhance operational efficiency, and create safer working environments.
Risk Research
The adoption of zero-emission fuels and technologies introduces new safety challenges and unknown risks. Our Risk Research initiative applies advanced Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) models and evidence-based methodologies to evaluate the safety implications of these threats. We work with industry partners, regulators and academic institutions to develop comprehensive risk management frameworks that inform safety standards, regulatory policies, and best practices. By pioneering data-driven risk research, we are setting new standards for safety management and resilience in maritime decarbonisation.
